EYES: An International Call for Art About the Ocular
Deadline: May 10, 2024
Artist Opportunity Type: Exhibition
Entry Fee: $40 for up to FOUR entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
Open to (any restrictions on entries): Open internationally
Exhibition/Event Dates: August 16 - September 13, 2024
Exhibition/Event Location: Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, 2727 Woodburn Avenue, Cincinnati, OH, 45206
Contact Person: Jason Franz, info@manifestgallery.org
Additional Information:The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit original works about, depicting, or exploring eyes and their relationship to sight and vision, perception, observation, and intuition. Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D visual arts media.
Aside from actual touch, eye contact is one of the most intimate gestures we can make. Eye contact signifies attention, seeing and being seen. Such interaction (and aversion to it) can also take on a variety of meanings in different contexts: respect, fear, affection, power. A shared gaze is communication and recognition. It allows us, forces us, to acknowledge the humanity in the other.
If we remove the human eye from the context of seeing, what does it mean on its own? An organic and fragile lens, a lightning-responsive aperture, a sensitive organ conveying information regarding color, distance, shape, and most importantly light to our brains and thereby to our minds. This eye, the eye as object and organ, can be assisted, repaired, fooled, and broken. It can even be stolen.
$40 for up to FOUR entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
Includes exhibitor honorarium of $50 for each exhibiting artist, and new Grand Jury Award of $1,000 for one jury-selected work from among the exhibits on view.

You can brush it, braid it, style it, and cut it at least once. Hair’s physicality is engaging. It associates closely with beauty, and it is significant to one’s personal and cultural identity. The look of it, the light on it, its movement, is all seductive.
With regard to its “thing-ness”, the boundary between “fiber” and “hair” is very thin. Creating certain hairstyles is sometimes indistinguishable from weaving or sculpting. Hair from an animal is made into clothing. Even human hair can be formed into wigs and extensions. Sometimes hair from a loved one is braided into keepsakes.

Wall-Mounted Artwork Commission for The Temple Sanctuary
Deadline: Ongoing
Artist Opportunity Type: RFQ
Entry Fee: free
Open to (any restrictions on entries): Open internationally
Exhibition/Event Dates: TBA
Event Location (City/Venue): 5101 US-42 • LOUISVILLE, KY 40241
Contact Name: linda@qtheagency.com
Additional Information: The Temple https://www.thetemplelouky.org/ Sanctuary Renovation Committee seeks
qualifications from established professional artists or artist teams seeking to win the commission to create two wall-mounted artworks for the Temple’s sanctuary in Louisville, KY, as part of renovations taking place in summer 2024. These artworks will depict subjects, themes, and/or events related to the heritage and practice of Judaism.
The Committee and Donor are interested in contemporary and/or traditional styles, and will not consider entirely non-objective or highly abstract work. There will be a narrative or referential component to the artworks. We are open to any medium, but the work must be two-dimensional or low relief (no thicker than 10”). Works will be sited on two side walls of the Sanctuary, and must fit within mounting/display
areas that are 36’6” X 16’. After reviewing the Qualifications submitted in response to this call, the Committee will notify 3
finalists who will be asked to submit specific proposals. Finalists will receive a stipend to cover costs of preparing their proposals.
Finalists will present their proposals to the Committee and the Donor in person, if possible. The format for presentations of proposed artworks may be digital or physical or both, but the
presentations must provide the review panel a clear visualization of the works as they will appear in the sanctuary. The Committee will provide renderings of the planned interior renovations to aid in this process.
It is important for applicants to understand that finalization of the artwork’s design will progress in collaboration with the Committee, the Donor, and The Temple Rabbi David Ariel-Joel.
Qualified applicants must submit
1. A complete Curriculum Vita (CV) that includes a full list of commissions and exhibitions.
2. A one-to-two page Letter of Introduction/Application articulating the applicant’s interest in and capacity to successfully complete the commission. Letters should also address applicants' experience working collaboratively with commissioners.
3. Two (2) images each of three (3) completed artworks (6 images total- preferably all commissions) that demonstrate competence to successfully realize this work for The Temple. Strong portfolios will show completed work at the indicated scale
(roughly 30’ X 12’), and clearly depict the artist(s) experience creating two-dimensional and/or low relief artworks in a representational style with narrative content. Strong portfolios will also show completed works in their permanent installation locations.
File Formats: CV and letter must be in PDF format. Images should be .jpg or .png format, 300 dpi, and between 1200 and 2400 pixels in the LONGEST DIMENSION. Image files should be no larger than 5MB each. Qualifications should be sent to: linda@qtheagency.com

Tuition:
Early Registration through May 3: $405 (Student Rate: $345)
Regular Registration through June 21: $450 (Student Rate: $383)
Watercolor is often lauded as either one of the most unforgiving artistic mediums or as a sketching tool only meant for studies. However, contrary to these opinions, watercolor is actually a versatile painting medium capable of intense depth, color, and complexity that can rival the most celebrated oil paintings.
In this three-day workshop, artist Reuben Negrón will demystify watercolors by guiding workshop participants, step-by-step, through his process. From start to finish, Reuben will highlight the importance of beginning with an underpainting, working in layers, and allowing for improvisation. By building a painting from the ground up, the class will learn the value of establishing a strong structural drawing, pushing contrast, and the ever-shifting relationships of color. This workshop will also include lectures and discussions on materials and best practices.
The workshop will begin with an in-person demonstration, followed by two days of painting, guided by personalized instruction and feedback.
Location:
Unless otherwise specified, all courses are hosted at Manifest's new facility at 'M1' in Clifton at 3464 Central Parkway. Manifest's new facility provides multiple studio classrooms, private lesson space, a darkroom, a film processing room, and a multi-purpose lecture and class meeting space as well as on-site parking, grounds, and exterior spaces in which to relax, discuss, and make art. The studios are outfitted with professional equipment, furniture, and study aids.

Contact: Alex Adams, contact@aaclay.com

Beginners to Intermediate skill levels are welcome! All materials are provided.
Friday, June 7, and Friday, June 14, 2024 (6:00 - 8:30 PM)
You'll spend two Friday evenings with instructor Haloy, learning the techniques of hand-building with porcelain by making wall hangings and trinket dishes.
Session One: Hand-Building
You will create designs on paper and roll slabs, and Haloy will help you hand-build using slabs of porcelain. This is not a wheel-throwing workshop.
Session Two: Painting with Under-glaze
Once your creations are dry to a certain stage (bone dry), you'll get to paint designs on them using under-glaze. Under-glaze is a type of paint specifically designed for ceramics that becomes incorporated into the clay during firing.
Firing:
The workshop includes firing your creations in a kiln. This high-temperature process transforms the clay into a strong and durable ceramic piece. There will be size limitations on what you can create due to the kiln's capacity.
Overall:
This workshop is a great opportunity to learn a new skill, create something unique with your own hands, and gain experience in the wonderful world of ceramics!
